Halloween Holiday
Halloween had always been Haze’s favourite holiday. Well, favourite time of year if she was to be honest. No stifling heat of summer, wet mud of spring or freezing chill of winter. The season with a little wind and beautiful colourful leaves. Too bad it didn’t last a little longer so she could really enjoy it. But sure enough, winter would be here all too soon. There was already frost on the ground in the mornings whenever she woke before the sun and the days were already feeling quite short. But that didn’t matter tonight. In fact, it was preferable. Because when it was dark, Haze would get to really revel in the decorations that other Snugzi’s had used to adorn their abodes as she walked through the neighborhood.
She patted down her outfit and rubbed her paw lovingly over the soft material. Haze had dressed up as a witch. Again. Honestly, it’s what she’d dressed up as for a number of years now. It was her favourite thing and she always managed to find some new accessory during the year to add to her already immaculate costume. One year it had been the corset, another some bracelets. Her little carved dragon amulet was a favourite as well and the long sparkly earrings with moons were quite dear to her. This year, she’d added some pins to her hat. It wasn’t much, but the little bats and spiders certainly added to the aesthetic. It was getting to a point that she looked a little over the top every time she put on the costume, but it was something Haze really enjoyed.
There were still a couple of hours before the nightly curfew where all the children and other Snugzi’s would turn in for the night. Some going right to bed, others taking the time to count through their loot and perhaps even trade it with their friends. Haze sometimes collected a little bit of candy, but it wasn’t her top priority. No, just taking the time to bask in the spirit of the season was her favourite thing. Also, getting pictures of her favourite decorated houses or sometimes even costumes was always a blast. But she had to get moving. After all, time didn’t stop for anyone!
Haze made her way out into the street, a little bag tucked into the waist of her skirt and she made the way down her walk. Living on the outskirts of town had many advantages. It meant she could grow whatever she wanted in her garden without too many complaints. It was always perfectly quiet at night, and her neighbours were too far away to be much of a nuisance but still close enough to help if needed. It did mean, however, that no one bothered to come to her own home in search of candy. The path was too long and out of the way for anyone to bother. She’d waited one year just in case.
It would be some time before she got to the other houses, so Haze hummed to herself and thought of her plans for the remainder of the evening. Once the curfew was done, she would be hosting a couple of her friends. She’s already made some spooky snacks and was excited to see what movies they’d brought for the annual halloween tradition. She wondered if they’d choose something actually scary, or something silly. Perhaps they would go back to the classics that they all enjoyed year after year. Whatever they chose, it was sure to be a pleasant surprise!
With a beaming smile on her face, Haze walked amongst the bustling houses and took in the decorations, looking up to the crescent moon bright in the sky above her. What a beautiful Halloween night.
Haze is taking a little time to enjoy some decorations and dress up in costume before hosting her friends for a spooky movie night! What fun!
