a tumble into bommie paws

Byakko loved winter.

He wasn’t entirely sure if it was the temperature or the way the snow clung heavy to the trees, but the little tiger found himself enamored with it every year. He felt at home during the winter. Felt most alive when he was laughing along with Slug and getting his blanket doused with snow while he made snow angels in the drifts. Winter just felt natural. He loved the snow and all the wonder it brought with it, including the critters that came with the cold.

Which is why he nearly keeled over from excitement when he saw little pawprints in the snow.

They were small. Tiny, even, little pittering prints that decorated the nearby forest drifts with swirling patterns. He stared at them for a moment, his head alight with so much excitement that he nearly forgot how to think at all. “Oh my god.” He mumbled, his multi-colored eyes staring wide at the snow. “Are those….” He trailed off with a flicker of his tail, an incoherent noise of pure delight echoing off the old pine trees. “Bommies!” The tiger shrieked with excitement, practically sprinting off into the surrounding woodland with all the wonder of a child.

The little footprints in the snow twisted and turned. They wove through the trees, and Byakko had to keep his head down just to keep track of them. He far too caught up in his excitement to realize the hill that was rapidly approaching him. Far too focused to even realize when he walked right over the decline, a sudden squawk of surprise leaving his frame as his arms flailed wildly for balance. He lost the battle with gravity almost immediately and tumbled down the snowy hill, squeaking with each roll as his blanket grew heavy with snow packed into the quilt.

“Ugh.” The tiger groaned as he finally came to a sliding stop at the bottom of the hill. You could hardly hear his sound through the thick snow he was laying face-down in. “Ouch.” Byakko laid there motionless for a few minutes just trying to regain his bearings. He really hoped nobody had seen his fall; that would have been embarrassing. Really embarrassing. ‘Never show his face in town again’ embarrassing. He finally mustered up the energy to move as the sound of nearby crunching snow filled his ears. Panicked, he shot upright with eyes, only to burst into a fit of happy laughter as the sight in front of him finally registered.

There, in the snow ahead, lay a pair of bommies.

They were delightfully cute. Tiny and delicate with wings almost as large as they were. Two little bommies that chirped happily when Byakko stirred, seemingly relieved that the tiger had been unharmed in his tumble down the hill. “Oh my goodness.” Byakko whispered, smushing his cheeks together with the fluff of his paws. “You two are so cute.” The two little bommies cocked their heads to the side with a slow string of chirps, staring at the tiger before bounding through the snow to tackle the Snugzi back into the ground. “Hey!” He laughed, gently moving one of the little birds off him so he could right himself once more. “Careful! I don’t want to squish you.” As cute as they were, Byakko was a little worried about them getting so close. He didn’t want to accidentally hurt one of them- they were quite fragile from what he’d heard.

It seemed like the bommies were far less afraid of Byakko as he was of them. The two of them hopped happily over the tiger, one of them nestling happily in the overflow of his blanket. It took Byakko a moment to realize that the smaller one was a blueberry themed owl, smelling sweetly as it circled his quilt before laying down on the cushioned fabric. His heart damn near melted right out of his body, tears of pure adoration welling up in his eyes. He was such a sucker for adorable things. A sucker for everything, really, but especially the cute and cherishable. “I’m never moving again.” He mumbled, doing his best to stay still so the little bommie could nap while the other crawled happily over his lap. The larger bommie was a lemon-scented swallow, cooing with contentedness as it circled in his lap before seemingly finding a comfortable spot and laying down.

Byakko didn’t dare move. He sat there in the snow, silent, gently petting the pair of bommies as they napped atop him. They were simply too cute to risk waking up. Even as the sun started to fade low in the sky, the Snugzi cradled the tiny critters with a happy purr.

God, Byakko loved winter.
