Kandy was woken up early on a cool day by the spring sun. She tossed and turned in the bed trying to get more sleep, before finally getting up to start the day. She dragged herself to the kitchen to make herself a fresh pot of tea. She opened up the cabinet where she kept her box of tea bags and picked her favorite kind, pumpkin spiced chai.
Kandy loved the autumn season more than any other. She loved the colors of the trees, the smell of burning leaves, the occasional soft rain, but most of all she loved the holiday that came with it, Halloween. It was the season where everything felt right. But there was one season Kandy absolutely despised: spring. The flowers bloomed too brightly, the air smelled too sweet, and the weather just couldn’t make up its mind. Kandy was planning on spending the whole season inside her home, enjoying the company of all her Halloween decorations and plushies until spring has ended.
As Kandy sat down in her dark, decorated living room, she had the feeling that something was off. She wasn't sure what, but she had the faintest feeling that she was currently being watched. Then she heard it, a soft giggle, it seemed almost like it came from every direction in her head.
“Who’s there?” Kandy asked, looking around.
No one answered. But Kandy was no fool, she could feel it in the air. Something mischievous was definitely afoot.
Kandy nervously took a sip of her once hot tea then immediately spit it out, disgusted by the taste, and fairly puzzled by it. She stood up and went back into the kitchen to see what could've gone wrong with her tea. After looking around for a bit, she thought that everything seemed normal. But then she looked at the jar of sugar and decided to give it a taste.
“Ughh is that.. salt? Who put salt in my sugar jar?” Kandy asked, severely confused.
The giggling started again, Kandy quickly turned around, and to her surprise she saw a new little creature she had never seen before. It was small, green, and it had pointy horns with a long triangle tipped tail. But the most noticeable thing about this creature was that it had a large glass orb on its back, and it was full of four leafed clovers.
“Well, well, well.. If it isn't Kandy the Halloween obsessed Snugzi! Enjoying this lovely spring day are we?” The imp-ish creature grinned widely, flicking its tail around in the air.
Kandy was stunned and wasn't sure what to think, before saying out loud the first couple of questions that came to her mind “Who are you, and what do you want?”
“Now, now..” the creature stepped forward. “Who I am isn't important, but what I want is this.” It paused before giggling again uncontrollably, then pointed directly at Kandy, puffing up their chest “Kandy, I challenge you to a PRANK OFF!!”
“A prank off? HA! You must really not know who you're dealing with, huh?”
“I've heard you're the best prankster around these parts, especially during Halloween! I wanted to put you to the test, given the fact it's spring now.” The creature crossed his arms playfully and raised an eyebrow at Kandy. “Sooo? Are you still as good as they say you are, even though it isn't Halloween?”
Kandy paused again to think, she really didn't want to do anything during the springtime. But she knew she couldn't turn down an opportunity like this. To prove that she really was the best prankster amongst the Snugzies, and not just during Halloween! “I’ll gladly accept this challenge! But on one condition.”
The creature looked annoyed. “Fine.. I suppose that's only fair. What is it?”
“Could you at least tell me what you are?
“Oh, I'm an Impon!” the creature bowed, like it was formally introducing itself. “Now what are we waiting for!? You're it!” The creature quickly booped Kandy on the nose before darting out the window, as if wanting to be chased. But this wasn't going to be no ordinary game of tag. Kandy giggled softly for a moment, silently planning her first epic prank against the Impon.
Over the next several days, Kandy and the Impon were going head to head in both elaborate and simple pranks. Eventually all kinds of creatures across Eternia, including Snugzies and Impons, had heard about these events taking place. Cheering for one side or the other and some were even keeping score. Kandy would win a point for an elaborate invisible sound prank that kept the Impon guessing on where the annoying squeaking sound was coming from. Then the Impon would get a point for a simple but effective, air horn inside a chair prank.
The score continued to be neck and neck, and Kandy was starting to get tired of coming up with and executing all these pranks. She wasn't even sure what all this was for anymore. Finally Kandy mustered up the courage to do the hardest thing she could do, admit that she was beat.
“Come on Kandy, gimme your best shot next time you see me! Maybe you'll win! But just keep in mind, I could do this all spring.” The Impon was hovering in the air with its hands behind its head.
“Actually, I'm calling it quits. You win, little guy.” For a moment Kandy had a look of disappointment on her face, but it quickly turned into a sigh of relief for it finally being over.
“Awe come on Kandy! I thought we were just warming up. Does this mean you're admitting that you aren't the best prankster?” The Impon had a smug yet prideful grin on his face.
“I never said that, but I just can't keep going any farther. But if you're up for it, maybe we could do this again next year?”
The Impon was stunned with a puzzled look, and slowly landed softly on the ground. “You mean.. You actually want to do this, again?”
“Well, yeah! Of course I would! This was so much fun, the most fun I've ever had in the spring. Just because I'm done now, doesn't mean I'll never wanna do this again.” Kandy said with a warm smile on her face. “So, would you like to be friends?” Kandy held out her hoof to the little Impon.
“Absolutely!” The Impon jumped up and down gleefully. “And I'll call this year a tie, but don't expect me to go so easy on you next year!”
Kandy laughed happily, “Oh I'm counting on it!”
The Impon reached out to finally shake Kandy's hoof, when suddenly.. BUZZZZ! To the little Impon’s surprise, they noticed a little handshake buzzer in the center of Kandy's hoof.
Kandy looked at the Impon with a smug face and giggled softly. “Got-chya~”
Then the two, and everyone around them had one last good laugh before all heading in their own directions to end this prank-filled day, and this silly little competition along with it for the year.
